Displays & BackdropsStep and Repeat Backdrop Size, Logo Layout and Setup Guide
How to choose a step and repeat backdrop size, lay out logos so they show in every photo, pick a frame, and set it up for events, galas and grand openings.
The right step and repeat backdrop size for most events is about 7.5 ft tall and 8 to 10 ft wide, enough for a few people per photo. Put two 10 ft backdrops side by side for teams, big groups and press lines. A step and repeat is the logo wall behind people in event photos at galas, grand openings, sports banquets and brand launches, and every photo taken in front of it carries your logo onto phones and social feeds. Here’s how to pick the size, lay out logos that show up in tight and wide shots, and choose a frame that stands straight. Our step and repeat backdrops come 8, 10, 15 and 20 ft wide.
What size step and repeat do you need?
Size depends on how many people will stand in front of it at once and how photos will be framed.
| Backdrop width | Good for |
|---|---|
| 8 ft | One to three people per photo; smaller venues, booths, school and church events |
| 10 ft | Groups of three to five; most galas, banquets and grand openings |
| Two 10 ft side by side | Teams, wedding parties, press walls and long red-carpet lines |
Height: our backdrops are 7.5 ft tall, which clears the heads of nearly everyone and keeps the edges out of most shots. Choose the slider frame (slides together with no tools) or the pop-up frame (opens in about a minute, with or without printed end caps).
Check the room, too. Measure the wall or space where it will stand, and leave several feet in front for guests and the photographer.
When in doubt, go wider. Photographers step back to fit groups, and a backdrop that’s too narrow shows the room around it.
Logo layout that shows up in every photo
The “repeat” is a grid of logos, usually your logo alternating with a sponsor or event logo.
- Logo size: big enough to read in a photo taken from about 10 ft away, but small enough that several logos appear around each face. A tile roughly 12 to 18 inches across is a common starting point; your proof will show the scale.
- Staggered pattern: offset each row, like bricks, so a logo lands near every head and shoulder no matter where people stand.
- Contrast: logos on a solid background color. White or brand-colored backgrounds work well; avoid busy photos behind the logos.
- Keep the bottom area plain or lighter. Feet and legs cover it, and it keeps the focus on faces.
- Sponsor fairness: alternate logos so each sponsor gets equal space. Our guide to fundraiser event banners covers sponsor recognition beyond the photo wall.
Frames and materials
You can choose from two frame styles, both with the printed fabric graphic and a carry bag:
| Frame | How it works | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Slider frame | Slides together with no tools; 8 or 10 ft wide, 7.5 ft tall | Light, easy transport, and a replacement graphic later for the same frame |
| Pop-up frame | A collapsible frame that opens in about a minute; 8 or 10 ft wide, with or without printed end caps | Quick setup and a smooth, wrapped look |
For a check-in or press table in front of the wall, a matching table cover finishes the set. For the aisle corners, a pair of roll-up banners carries the same design at eye level.
Fabric vs vinyl: fabric has a matte finish with no glare under camera flashes and lights, which is why it’s the favorite for photo walls. Vinyl is tougher outdoors but can reflect flash. Our vinyl vs fabric banners guide explains the difference.
Setup tips for great photos
- Place it where there’s room to step back. Photographers need several feet of space.
- Light it evenly. Avoid harsh spotlights that wash out one side.
- Mark a spot on the floor with tape so guests know where to stand.
- Add a red carpet runner, stanchions or a few props for events that want a premium feel.
- Keep it smooth. Steam out fabric wrinkles before guests arrive and keep cords out of the shot.
- Secure it. Weighted bases keep frames from tipping in crowded spaces or outdoors.
Beyond red carpets
Step and repeats work at:
- Grand openings and ribbon cuttings
- Sports banquets and team photo days
- School dances and graduations
- Church and community events
- Trade show booths, as a photo-worthy back wall (see our trade show booth checklist)
For parties and showers, a round event backdrop is a softer alternative with the same photo power.

FAQ
What is the most common step and repeat size?
About 7.5 ft tall by 8 to 10 ft wide covers most events and fits a few people per photo. Put two 10 ft backdrops side by side for large groups or press lines.
How big should the logos be?
Big enough to read in a photo taken from about 10 ft away, with several logos visible around each face. We lay out the repeat pattern on your free proof so you can check the scale.
Fabric or vinyl for a photo backdrop?
Fabric. It has a matte finish that doesn’t glare under flash and lighting.
Can I use it outdoors?
Yes, on calm days with the base well weighted, but a backdrop catches wind like a sail. Take it down or bring it in when wind picks up or rain starts.
