Events & MarketsWinter Outdoor Markets in Warm States: Holiday Booth Planning
Winter outdoor markets are peak season in warm states. Plan your holiday booth: ordering timeline, evening setups, cool nights, wind, rain and branding.
In much of the country, winter outdoor markets are a short, chilly sideline. Across the South and Southwest, they’re the main event. From Florida and the Gulf Coast to Texas, Arizona, Nevada and Southern California, mild winter days bring out holiday markets, tree lightings, parades, night markets and weekly farmers markets that never close. If you sell in a warm state, your busiest weekends of the year may be in November and December. Here’s how to plan a holiday booth that’s ready on time and works from a sunny afternoon into a cool evening.
Why winter is peak season down south
When summer heat finally breaks, outdoor events pile onto the calendar. In warm states, late fall through early spring is often the most comfortable time to be outside, and that’s exactly when holiday shopping peaks.
- Holiday and Christmas-style markets run on weekends and sometimes weeknights through December.
- Tree lightings, parades and downtown events draw evening crowds.
- Farmers markets keep running through winter in many warm areas, with holiday gifts added to the usual produce and food.
- Seasonal residents and visitors arrive in Florida, Arizona and other sunny states and fill markets through winter and spring.
Because events stack up so tightly, many vendors book back-to-back weekends. Durable, quick-to-set-up gear matters more than ever.
Plan backward from your first market
Custom gear is made to order with your design, so the most common holiday mistake is ordering too late. Count back from the date of your first big market.
| Step | Typical timing |
|---|---|
| Request a quote | Price and free design proof within 3 business days |
| Booths and tents | About 6 weeks after proof approval and payment (faster shipping, about 4 weeks, can be requested) |
| Flags, table covers and banners | About 2 to 3 weeks after approval and payment |
| Apparel | About 10 to 15 business days |
Leave a cushion for proof changes and your own schedule, and enter your “need by” date when you request a quote. Shipping is free to the lower 48 states and DC. Our guide on how far ahead to order a custom tent goes into more detail.
Short on time? If your first market is only a few weeks away, start with the fast pieces. A printed table cover, a feather flag and a banner take about 2 to 3 weeks and make a plain canopy look branded while you plan a full booth for spring markets.
Evening markets and short days
Winter days are short, and many holiday events run into the evening. A booth that looks great at noon can disappear after dark.
- Bring your own lighting. Battery-powered lights clipped to the frame make your booth glow and show off your products. Check your event’s rules on power and cords first.
- A lighter canopy looks brighter under string lights and streetlights than a dark one.
- Use high-contrast logos. Dark text on a light background, or light on dark, reads best in low light.
- Light your back wall. A printed back wall becomes a backdrop for holiday photos, and every photo shows your name.
Cool nights and changing weather
Warm-state winters are mild, not predictable. Plan for a wider range of conditions than you see in summer.
- Desert nights get cold. In Arizona, Nevada and New Mexico, a sunny afternoon can drop to near freezing after sunset. Pack layers.
- Cold fronts bring wind. In Texas and across the South, a passing front can turn a calm day gusty and cold within hours.
- Santa Ana winds can bring dry, gusty days to Southern California markets in fall and winter.
- Winter rain is common in Northern California and along the Gulf Coast.
Full side walls block wind and keep a booth cozier on cold evenings. Take them off if gusts get strong, and take the canopy down in high wind. Our guide to canopy sidewalls explains when full walls, half walls or none make sense. Weigh down every leg, every time.
For your crew, branded crewnecks and quarter-zips from our custom apparel line keep everyone warm and make them easy to spot in an evening crowd.
Holiday branding without a throwaway booth
It’s tempting to put snowflakes and holly on everything. But a canopy is an investment you’ll use all year, so keep it evergreen and add holiday touches with smaller pieces.
- Canopy and back wall: your logo, your name and what you sell. These work in July as well as December.
- Table: swap in a holiday-themed table runner over your everyday cover, or order a seasonal table cover for winter markets.
- Flags and banners: a seasonal message like “Holiday gifts” or “Gift sets here” on a flag or banner points shoppers your way without changing your whole booth.
- Giveaways: custom PVC keychains make easy stocking stuffers or freebies with a purchase, and they keep your logo in front of people long after the market.
Choosing a booth for your first holiday season
If this is your first season with a branded booth, a bundle takes the guesswork out. Our booth bundles package a complete 10x10 booth at a set price, so you can focus on products and planning. If you need a different size or want to pick every detail, build your own instead. Our guide on choosing a booth bundle or building your own compares the two.
Either way, a 45mm or 50mm frame and 600D fabric are worth considering if you’ll sell through winter and keep going into spring.
FAQ
When should I order a custom booth for holiday markets?
Count back from your first market. Booths take about 6 weeks after proof approval and payment, plus up to 3 business days for your quote and time for proof changes. Faster shipping (about 4 weeks) can be requested.
Do I need side walls at winter markets?
They help on cool, breezy evenings. Use full walls to block wind and add warmth, but take them off if gusts get strong.
Should I put holiday designs on my canopy?
Usually not. Keep the canopy evergreen so it works all year, and use table runners, flags and banners for seasonal messages.
How do I make my booth visible at night markets?
Bring battery-powered lights (check event rules), choose high-contrast colors, and light your back wall so your name shows up after dark.
