Printable Ephemera: How to Use Fussy Cuts, Tags and Papers

Printable ephemera explained: what it is, how to print and fussy cut it, and creative ways to use tags, stamps, tickets and labels in journals and crafts.

Printable ephemera is artwork of the little paper bits crafters love, like stamps, tickets, labels, tags, botanical cut-outs and frames, that you print at home and cut out. It’s a fast way to add a vintage, collected look to junk journals, scrapbooks, cards and gift wrap without hunting through flea markets. Here’s what counts as ephemera, how to print and fussy cut it cleanly, and plenty of ways to use it.

What is ephemera?

Ephemera originally meant paper made to be used briefly and thrown away: tickets, receipts, postage stamps, labels, letters and packaging. Crafters collect it because it adds history and texture. Printable ephemera recreates that look as artwork you can print again and again.

Type What it is Best uses
Fussy cuts Single images (flowers, leaves, specimens) you cut around closely Page focal points, layering, card fronts
Stamps Small postage-style images with scalloped edges Corners, borders, envelope decor
Tickets Numbered admission-style strips Tucking into pockets, dating pages
Labels Oval, rectangle and banner shapes with room to write Titles, captions, jar and gift labels
Tags Shipping-tag shapes with a punch hole Pockets, gift tags, bookmarks
Frames and doilies Borders and lace rounds Framing photos or journaling
Word strips Short printed phrases Captions and quick sentiments
Background papers Full-page aged or ruled sheets Page bases, covers, pockets

How to print ephemera so it looks right

  • Print at 100% or Actual Size, not Fit to Page. Otherwise tags and stamps shrink off their true size.
  • Choose paper for the job. For pieces you’ll cut and glue, about 32 lb (120 gsm) paper or light card stock holds a crisp edge. Thinner paper is fine for layering, and matte paper gives the most vintage look. Our best paper for printables guide goes deeper.
  • Use your printer’s best quality setting for detailed botanical art.
  • Print a test page first to check color before running a full batch.
  • Let the ink dry for a few minutes before cutting, especially on heavier paper.

How to fussy cut printable ephemera

Fussy cutting means cutting closely around the shape of an image instead of in a straight square. It takes a little patience, and many crafters find it relaxing.

  1. Rough cut first. Cut a loose square around the piece so it’s easier to handle.
  2. Use small, sharp scissors. Detail scissors with a fine tip make tight curves easier.
  3. Turn the paper, not the scissors. Keep your cutting hand steady and feed the paper into the blades.
  4. Leave a thin border if you like. A narrow cream or white edge is easier to cut and helps the piece stand out on a busy background.
  5. Use a craft knife for inside spaces, on a self-healing cutting mat.
  6. Distress the edges if you want an aged look. Rub them with an ink pad, a sanding block or the side of your scissors.

Cutting guides on a printable are just that: guides. Cut around each piece however you like.

Ways to use printable ephemera

In junk journals and scrapbooks

  • Layer a background paper, a frame, a fussy cut and a label for a quick finished page.
  • Tuck tickets and tags into pockets so each page has something to discover.
  • Line up stamps as a border or along the top of a pocket.
  • Date a page with a numbered ticket.

In cards and gifts

  • Glue a botanical fussy cut to the front of a folded card.
  • Turn tags into gift tags with a hole punch and twine.
  • Add labels to jars of homemade jam, spice blends or candles you’re giving away.

Around the house

  • Make bookmarks from tags or long word strips.
  • Label storage boxes, pantry jars or craft drawers.
  • String tags and fussy cuts on twine for a seasonal garland.
  • Decorate envelopes for letters and thank-you notes.

With kids or a group

  • Set out pre-cut pieces for a card-making afternoon.
  • Let kids build a nature journal page with printed leaves and labels.
