Confirmation Gift Ideas for Teens, From Keepsakes to Crosses

Confirmation gift ideas for teens and adults: crosses, saint gifts, prayer helps and free ideas like a sponsor letter, plus what to write in the card.

Good confirmation gift ideas for teens mix something lasting with something personal: a cross for their room, a gift tied to their Confirmation saint, a prayer help they’ll actually use, and a letter from you they can reread later. Teens can spot a generic gift from across the room, so the more a gift connects to their own name, saint and story, the longer they keep it. Here are ideas for parents, sponsors and family, including gifts that cost nothing.

What Confirmation means (and why it shapes the gift)

Confirmation is one of the three sacraments of initiation, along with Baptism and the Eucharist. The Church teaches that it completes baptismal grace and strengthens the person with the gifts of the Holy Spirit (Catechism of the Catholic Church 1285). The bishop, or a priest he delegates, anoints the forehead with chrism.

When Confirmation happens varies a lot. Many US dioceses confirm in the middle or high school years, some confirm younger children before First Communion, and adults coming into the Church through OCIA (formerly called RCIA) are usually confirmed at the Easter Vigil. Check with your parish for the timing where you are.

Three parts of the sacrament make great starting points for a gift:

  • The Confirmation name. Many candidates choose a saint’s name. A gift tied to that saint feels chosen just for them.
  • The sponsor. The sponsor promises to support the person in faith, so a sponsor’s gift carries extra weight.
  • The gifts of the Holy Spirit. Wisdom, understanding, counsel, fortitude, knowledge, piety and fear of the Lord (CCC 1831, drawing on Isaiah 11:2). A card that names one you see in them is a gift in itself.

Confirmation gift ideas: keepsakes and crosses

A cross for their room, dorm or first apartment. A cross is a classic Confirmation gift because it moves with them. Our three hand-painted resin crosses suit different personalities:

Cross Look Often fits
Cross of Light Bright white with a hand-painted gold crown of thorns A bright, clean room style
Cross of Peace Aged, stone-washed finish with gold highlights A teen who likes a classic, timeworn look
Cross of Mercy Rich wood-grain frame around a soft, carved face A warm, natural style

Each is about 6.5 inches tall and 3.5 inches wide, about 1.5 pounds, and comes in a gift box. If you’d like the cross blessed, ask a priest; many will bless it right after the Confirmation Mass.

A saint medal or book. Look for a medal of their Confirmation saint, or a good biography. If they chose a lesser-known saint, take the time to find something specific. That effort is noticed.

A Catholic study Bible or journal. A teen-friendly Catholic Bible, or a quality journal with a note on the first page, gives them room to grow into the faith they just professed.

Gifts that help them keep praying

The months after Confirmation can be quiet. A gift that makes prayer easy helps the day turn into a habit.

  • A Rosary with a guide. Pair beads with our How to Pray the Rosary printable, which shows a labeled bead diagram, the order of the prayers and the four sets of mysteries with their usual days.
  • A clear reference to the sacraments. The Seven Sacraments printable lays out all seven, grouped as initiation, healing and service, with each one’s outward sign and when it’s usually received. It makes a handy page for a teen’s binder or a confirmand’s bulletin board. Our post on the seven sacraments for kids explains them in plain words.
  • A prayer app or a book of short daily readings. Choose one from a Catholic publisher you trust.

Meaningful Confirmation gifts that cost nothing

A letter from the sponsor. This may be the most important gift a sponsor gives. Write why you said yes, what you pray for them, and one way you’ve seen God work in your own life. Keep it honest and short.

A Mass offered for them. Ask your parish office about having a Mass offered for the confirmand’s intention. The parish will explain how it works locally and usually provides a card to include with your gift.

The story behind their saint. Write out why their Confirmation saint matters and where you see that saint’s strengths in them. If they’re named after a family member who was named after a saint, tell that story too.

Time. Breakfast after Sunday Mass once a month, a trip to visit a cathedral or shrine in your region, or helping at a parish service project together. For teens, your time is a gift that says the relationship didn’t end at the ceremony.

Gifts for adults being confirmed

Adults confirmed through OCIA often receive Baptism, Confirmation and First Communion at once, or are being received into full communion. They usually appreciate:

  • A cross for their home, from their sponsor or OCIA team.
  • A companion for the journey. Our Becoming Catholic OCIA Companion walks through the whole process in order, with a glossary of terms and a section for sponsors. It’s a thoughtful gift early in the year, before the Easter Vigil.
  • A letter welcoming them, signed by the people who walked with them.

Read our guide to OCIA (RCIA) and what to expect if you’re sponsoring an adult for the first time.

What to write in a Confirmation card

  • “May the Holy Spirit give you courage and wisdom all your life. I’m honored to stand behind you.”
  • “I’ve watched you grow in [patience, kindness, courage]. That’s the Spirit at work.”
  • “Your saint chose a hard path and never quit. So can you. Love, [name].”

Our gifts ship in 1 to 2 business days, and two or more ship free to the lower 48 states and DC, which helps if you’re buying for a confirmand and a sibling, or for several godchildren in one season. For younger sacraments, see our First Communion gift ideas.

FAQ

What do you give someone for Confirmation?

Popular gifts include a cross, a saint medal tied to their Confirmation name, a Rosary, a Catholic Bible and a handwritten letter. A gift connected to their chosen saint feels the most personal.

What does a Confirmation sponsor give?

Sponsors often give a lasting religious gift, like a cross or a saint medal, plus a personal letter. Many also give their time, staying involved in the teen’s faith life after the ceremony.

Is money a good Confirmation gift for a teenager?

Money is common and appreciated, especially from extended family. Adding a short card about the meaning of the day keeps the gift tied to the sacrament.

How old are kids when they get confirmed?

It depends on the diocese. Many US dioceses confirm in the middle or high school years, and some confirm younger children. Check with your parish.

Can I get a Confirmation gift blessed?

Yes. Ask a priest after Mass or call the parish office. Religious items like crosses, medals and Rosaries are commonly blessed.
